Epistle dedicatory signed: Phil Scot.; Phil. Scot has veen variously identified as Walter Harris, or Herries, James Hodges, Archibald Foyer, and one H-A, who is constantly referred to in an answer to the Defence entitled, An enquiry into the causes of the miscarriage of the Scots colony at Darien, Glasgow, 1700.; Place of publication conjectured by Wing.; In part a reply to: A defence of the Scots settlement at Darien, printed in Edinburgh, 1699 (Scott, 67). This work has been variously attributed to John Hamilton Belhaven, Andrew Fletcher, and George Ridpath. Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun.; "This is the second of the books for which Walter Heries or Harris was ordered to be prosecuted by the Scottish Parliament. The book was ordered to be burned." See Scott.; Another issue printed in Edinburgh with 50 pages appeared in the same year (Scott (Supplement), 103).; Two issues with 168 pages were printed in Ediburgh in the same year: in this one, the word "Dunensi" is printed in Roman type; in the other the word "Dunensi" is printed in italic type. Within this issue, there are two states of the text: one in which page 18 is correctly numbered and catchword on page 22 is "the" and other in which page 18 is numbered 1S and there is no catchword on page 22..; Pages 145-165 and 167-168 have been printed in a different size of type from pages [1-20] and 1-60; the text is continuous despite pagination.; Signatures: A-N⁴ (A1, N4 versos blank).; Title printed within double rule border.
