General Note:
Isaac Coymans served the Dutch West India Company as a bookkeeper and merchant stationed on the gold coast of Africa. In 1649, he returned to the Netherlands in order to start a slave trading business. After the discovery of secret correspondence with Joost Kramer, commander of the Danish Africa Company, Coymans was accused of inciting Kramer against his employer by claiming that the Danish Africa Company had planned an attack on him and planned to murder the head of the Blacks. Coymans suggested that Kramer attack Fort Nassau (near Moree, Ghana) with the help of the Blacks. As a result, Coymans was arrested and sentenced to six years imprisonment, a lifelong banishment from the Netherlands and areas covered by the charter of the Dutch West India Company, a fine of 20 thousand guilders, and the costs of his trial and imprisonment.; Signatures: A⁴ (A1, A4 versos blank); Woodcut initial.
