Description:
Bird's-eye view of the port of the island of Cayenne established by the French. Built environment includes fortifications, ships, boats, and an encampment. Also includes French soldiers and sailors, as well as native Americans and their settlement. Includes a compass rose. Items in the image are lettered for identification in key below.
notes:
This print depicts the landing of the French expedition of 1652 at Cayenne. The hill of Cépérou, seen in the foreground with native Americans (with feathered headdresses) on it, was given to the French in 1643 by a native American chief of the same name.
