Description:
At top is an ancient Marcoman armed with wood flanked by a native American also armed with wood. Between them is a war club, along with other symbols of ancient Christian times. At bottom is a war party setting out from its village in single file. The chief is chanting a song of death. Cultural artifacts include bow, arrows, feathered headdresses, armor and helmets made of wood. Also includes dwellings.

The illustration of the Marcoman is taken from Caesar's Commentaries, London, 1712, and the native American is taken from Champlain's Voyages, Paris, 1632. The Marcoman invasion of the Roman empire occurred from 170 to 180 AD. Identification of activities and people in image and image title taken from "Explication des planches et figures," in preface.
