Poughkeepsie comes from the Wappinger Indians' name for a reed lodge by a small spring; perhaps this spring is shown in the image. Thomas Pownall went to New York in 1753 as private secretary to Sir Danvers Osborn who commited suicide soon after their arrival. In 1757, Pownall was appointed governor of Massachusetts by William Pitt and vigorously followed Pitt's policy during the French and Indian War. One of a group of six plates, now disbound.
