notes:
The Great Falls in the town of Patterson, New Jersey, on the Passaic River are the second highest on the east coast of North America, after Niagara Falls. Thomas Pownall went to New York in 1753 as private secretary to Sir Danvers Osborn who commited suicide soon after their arrival. In 1757, Pownall was appointed governor of Massachusetts by William Pitt and vigorously followed Pitt's policy during the French and Indian War. One of a group of six plates, now disbound.
