Elias Durnford was appointed surveyor-general of British West Florida in 1764. In 1762, Col. William Howe established an artillery battery at this location to cut the enemy's communication to the west and protect the British supply of water coming from that direction. Neither stratagem worked and the city came through the British siege relatively unscathed.
