notes:
Medina places this image before p. 249, an addendum (presumably written after the 1811 publication date of this book) which describes how an apparition of palms of victory appeared in the sky before Spanish victories during the wars of Mexican independence. Rebels in Zitácuaro had attempted to establish an independent government and were attacked by royalist forces under General Felix Maria Calleja. After winning the battle in Zitácuaro at the beginning of January 1812, Calleja marched on to Cuautla. The battle of Cuautla ended in May 1812 with Calleja claiming victory, but with his forces badly weakened. This image was engraved from a sketch done by Diego Miguel Bringas, emmissary from the Colegio Apotolico de la Santa Cruz de Queretaro. One shape appeared two days before the battle in Zitácuaro, the other one day before the same battle. The third shape appeared in Cuautla. Image placed horizontally on page.
