notes:
Juan de Fuca, a Greek pilot orginally named Apostolos Valerianos, sailed for the Spanish from Mexico to look for a northern passage from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic and to seek the fabled Straits of Anian in 1592. The strait, which connects Puget Sound to the Pacific Ocean on the border between present-day United States and Canada, was named in 1787 by the English Captain Charles William Barkley.John Meares made two trips to northwestern North America, one in 1786-1787 and the other in 1788-1789, both with false papers in the hope of trading for furs on lands claimed by Spain. His activities nearly sparked a war with Spain. He was also accused by his more respectable fellow mariners of having aggrandized his accomplishments.
