notes:
On December 7, 1776, the British fleet sailed into Narragansett Bay and occupied Newport, effectively blockading the American fleet during the Revolutionary War. A long siege to evict the British culminated in August 1778 in the Battle of Rhode Island. The battle was a coordinated attack involving two American battalions and the French fleet, but it proved inconclusive. It did, however, mark the first contest which combined the efforts of the Americans with their French allies.
