notes:
The Provincia de San Diego de Mexico was established by the Discalced Franciscans. In 1680 it had 197 friars and 11 friaries (although this map states there are 12 convents). Sabin makes the claim that this map is "the earliest specimen of copper-plate engraving done in Mexico," although an earlier map was printed in Juan Francisco Montemayor de Cuenca, Discurso politico-historico juridico del derecho ... (Mexico, 1658). Image placed horizontally on page.
