notes:
This work is drawn from material that originally appeared in volume 5 of Jean Bernard, Recueil de voyages au Nord, Amsterdam, 1715. It also includes Henri Tonti, Dernières découvertes, Paris, 1697, and Louis Hennepin, Nouveau voyage, Utrecht, 1698. All the illustrations in this book have been taken from De Bry's America, Part 1. They have been adapted to a smaller format, and some images combine two or more of the originals into one. This plate corresponds to plates XIX, The Towne of Pomeiooc, and XX, The Towne of Secota, in De Bry's America, Part 1. All the illustrations are also taken from Beverly, Histoire de la Virginie, ... Amsterdam, 1707, a book whose illustrations were often pirated (cf. 11902-8). Whereas De Bry and Beverly described the native Americans illustrated as from Virginia, here they are described as being from Mississippi.
