notes:
This is probably false Solomon's seal, now known as Maianthemum or Smilacina racemosa, possibly Maianthemum canadense. Cornut was a Parisian physician who never set foot on American soil, but he obtained specimens from the French traders and explorers for his garden. The inclusion of roots in the illustrations reveals the origin of his interest in medical botany.
