Raddi, a Tuscan botanist, went to Brazil in 1817 under the patronage of the Grand Duke of Tuscany in the Austrian mission with Johann Baptist von Spix, Karl Friedrich Philipp von Martius, Johann Baptist Emanuel Pohl, and other scientists. He visited the environs of Rio de Janeiro and probably made other short journeys before returning to Italy. This is probably a lichenous fungus, now known as Spiloma roseum Raddi. The lichen is sometimes used by Brazilian hummingbirds to make their nests. Image title from list of plates.
