notes:
The muskox, Ovibos moschatus, is native to the Arctic. Its numbers have been greatly reduced due perhaps to hunting and climate change. Text notes that there are not many of the animals already at the end of the seventeenth century. It was easy for the natives to hunt, because it has short legs and cannot move quickly in the snow. These animals were seen between the Riviere Danoise (now the Churchill River in Saskatchewan and Manitoba) and the Riviere du Loup-Marin. The first part, Relation du detroit et de la baie de Hudson, is a reprint from the sixth volume of Bernard's "Recueil de voyage au Nord", first printed Amsterdam, 1715. It appears to be written by Nicolas Jérémie (1669-1732), who was an important officer at Fort Bourbon (York Factory) under the French.
