notes:
John Dunn Hunter was kidnapped from a settlement west of the Mississippi River by native Americans, perhaps the Kickapoo, as a child and lived with the Kansas and Osage until the age of nineteen. He abandoned his Indian family and entered white society, became educated, and met some of the most influential people of the age. He was accused of being an imposter, but went to England and Scotland where he was celebrated by even the royal family. Perhaps intending to establish a kind of utopian sanctuary for the Indians, he then returned to the United States and traveled to Texas where he was shot by an Indian. Artist is probably the British painter Charles Robert Leslie (1794-1859).
