notes:
Text discusses the Illinois people who were welcoming to the explorers and gave them calumets of about three feet long decorated with feathers. Jacques Marquette, a Jesuit missionary, and Louis Joliet, a fur trader, explored the Mississippi River in 1673 from the headwaters of the Mississippi to the Arkansas River (where they turned back fearing capture by Spanish soldiers) and never reached the Gulf of Mexico. This image follows the special title page for Ontdekking van eenige landen en volkerent in 't Noorder-gedeelte van America door P. Marquette en Joliet ..., Leiden, 1707. This collection of voyages consists of 127 parts, each having a special title page, separate pagination, and register. The voyages covering the period from 1246 to 1696 are arranged chronologically.
