notes:
Surinam toads (Pipa pipa), also called star-fingered toads, are of a very flat shape and with star-like appendages on their front feet and shovel-like back feet. The female toad carries her fertilized eggs on her back. Over several days the eggs form pockets on her back and the larvae develop through the tadpole stage inside these pockets, eventually emerging from the mother's back as fully developed, but very small, toads.
