notes:
Tree-dwelling spiders or pink-toed tarantulas [Avicularia avicularia] are shown eating ants, a hummingbird, and an insect on a guava tree [Psidium guineense Swartz]. Avicularia avicularia are native to northern South America and are also known as bird-eating spiders. Included are leaf-cutter ants, army ants, huntsman spiders, and a ruby-topaz hummingbird. Merian first published Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium in 1705; in 1719, her daughters brought out a second edition in Dutch and in Latin, reusing the original plates and adding 12 more plates and corresponding text. This new edition was created by pressing each still wet image onto a sheet of clean paper, creating a "counter-impression" which was reversed from the original, thus producing two prints from one inking. Notes on the plants contributed by Caspar Commelin.
