notes:
The abbé Prévost wrote this novel or biography as an exposition of his philosophical ideas. It is a translation of Le philosophe anglois and tells the story of the supposed natural son of Oliver Cromwell, Cleveland. Cleveland went to the New World to try to establish utopian communities in Virginia and the Carolinas, but human nature always foiled him. He also visited the Caribbean.
