notes:
The text describes how the widows of Timucua Indians killed in warfare petition the chief to support them during their mourning period and allow them to marry again. They also cut their hair and scatter it on the graves of their husbands along with his weapons and drinking shells. Widows are forbidden to remarry until their hair grows long enough to cover their shoulders. This image derived from Theodor de Bry, America, part 2, plates 18 & 19, and follows the special title page for Verscheyde scheeps-togten na Florida, door Pontius, Ribald, Laudonniere, Gourgues en andere: Gedaan Anno 1562 ... , Leiden, 1706. This collection of voyages consists of 127 parts, each having a special title page, separate pagination, and register. The voyages covering the period from 1246 to 1696 are arranged chronologically.
