notes:
Text describes how the Tupinamba, also known as the Tuppin Imba or Tupi, would assemble once a year for a feast. The men danced around three or four men who rattled maracas which they believed were the spirits talking to them. They also smoked long tubes of tobacco. This image is derived from Theodor de Bry, America, part 3, p. 228, and follows the special title page for Jean de Lery, De seer aanmerklijke en vermaarde reys van Johannes Lerius na Brazil in America. Gedaan Anno 1556 ... , Leiden, 1706.This collection of voyages consists of 127 parts, each having a special title page, separate pagination, and register. The voyages covering the period from 1246 to 1696 are arranged chronologically.
