notes:
Text describes the religion of the Tupinamba, also known as the Tuppin Imba or Tupi. Lery asserts that the Tupinamba believed that those who behaved badly were tormented by an evil spirit or devil they called Aygnan. Sometimes they imagined Aygnan was beating them and they screamed for mercy. This image describes the same text found in Theodor de Bry, America, part 3, p. 223, but is quite different, and follows the special title page for Jean de Lery, De seer aanmerklijke en vermaarde reys van Johannes Lerius na Brazil in America. Gedaan Anno 1556 ... , Leiden, 1706.This collection of voyages consists of 127 parts, each having a special title page, separate pagination, and register. The voyages covering the period from 1246 to 1696 are arranged chronologically.
