Description:
Allegorical representation of Brazil's and Portugal's king, João VI and the joining of his son Dom Pedro (future Pedro I, emperor of Brazil) and Archduchess Maria Leopoldina of Austria. João VI in royal robes and crown is supported by personifications of the three parts of his empire, Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves. Below this group and on either side of the altar of Hymen, are kneeling figures of Hymen and Love carrying portraits of the betrothed prince and archduchess and the interlaced initials of the royal pair. Below this at the right is Neptune carrying his trident and the flag of the united empire. To the left is Venus's shell being drawn by two swans guided by Cupid. In the shell are the three graces who hold the shields of the two nations being united by marriage. In the background at top are Jupiter or Zeus (left with eagle), Minerva or Athena, Neptune, other mythological gods, Mercury, Juno (right with peacock), and Apollo. Includes dolphins, quiver of arrows, armor, spears, floral garlands, wreaths, doves, scepter, and globe.
