notes:
The imperial palace shown is the Palácio Real de Santa Cruz. The emperor Pedro I freed all his slaves and gave them each a piece of land in the area. Text states that the inscription is on a rock called Le Rocher des Buissons or Rochedo dos Arvoredos; it also discusses the possible linguistic sources for the writing. The rock is near the Ilha de Santa Caterina, Brazil. The lithographs in this book were made from drawings made by Debret during his fifteen-year residence (1816-1831) in Brazil.
