notes:
The burning of the Judas figures took place at dawn on Easter Sunday when Christ's resurrection was celebrated by the ringing of bells and firing of guns. The Judas effigies were erected during the preceding night (Holy Saturday). The lithographs in this book were made from drawings made by Debret during his fifteen-year residence (1816-1831) in Brazil.
