Portrait of John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville. Also includes the coat of arms of the Carteret family.

Carteret had inherited a one-eighth share in the province of Carolina, but refused, unlike the rest of the shareholders, to sell his portion back to the crown. His land, a 60-mile wide strip of land in North Carolina just south of Virginia, became known as the Granville District. The Carteret family retained ownership of the district until the death of Carteret's son, Robert, in 1776.Peter Pelham was an well-known mezzotint engraver who emigrated to America around 1727.
