notes:
Text describes a slave from the tribe called the Carios, who urged his masters to kill Hans Staden. That slave fell ill, and the Tupinamba killed him, believing that he would die anyway. Because he was so ugly the Indians cut off the head and threw it away. This image is similar to one found in Hans Staden, Warhaftige Historia ..., Marburg, 1557, but is probably derived from Theodor de Bry, America, part 3 , p. 71. It follows the special title page for Hans Staden, De voorname Scheeps-togten van Jan Staden van Homburg in Hessen, na Brazil ... , Leiden, 1706. This collection of voyages consists of 127 parts, each having a special title page, separate pagination, and register. The voyages covering the period from 1246 to 1696 are arranged chronologically.
