notes:
Hans Staden reached the coast near present-day Recife and went to help get supplies to the Portuguese in the nearby fort close to Cape Saint Augustine which was being attacked by native Americans. Although the natives tried to block the river with trees, Staden's group managed to save the Portuguese. The native American settlement was at present-day Pernambuco. This image is similar to one found in Hans Staden, Warhaftige Historia ..., Marburg, 1557, and follows the special title page for Hans Staden, De voorname Scheeps-togten van Jan Staden van Homburg in Hessen, na Brazil ... , Leiden, 1706. This collection of voyages consists of 127 parts, each having a special title page, separate pagination, and register. The voyages covering the period from 1246 to 1696 are arranged chronologically.
