[top] Text notes that João VI preferred to live in his country house, but his wife and son spent most of their time in the palace in the city. It was used primarily for ceremonial and court occasions. The palace is seen at the left of the image. It was built in the 18th century to serve as residence for the governors of colonial Brazil and was later used by King John VI of Portugal and the rulers of the Empire of Brazil, Pedro I and Pedro II.[bottom] The city as it appeared in 1831.The lithographs in this book were made from drawings made by Debret during his fifteen-year residence (1816-1831) in Brazil.Image placed horizontally on page.
