notes:
Located on the Berbice River, New Amsterdam, first built in 1740 by the Dutch and named Fort Sint Andries, was made the seat of the Dutch colonial government in 1790, but taken over by the British in 1803. The site of the signal station is presently known as Brandwagt-Sari, Guyana.Hartsinck, a director of the Dutch West India Company (VOC), had access to many VOC documents now lost, as well as to the papers of his father (who had been director of the Surinam Society for 25 years). He was also an official of the Admiralty in Amsterdam and a member of the Zeeland Academy of Sciences.
