[top] A young man sits at the entrance to an open-front shop selling dried meat. Includes shelves, chandelier, scale and pallets of meat, [bottom] A man and woman on horseback followed by a black or native American man riding a donkey or mule ride through the countryside. The woman is dressed in a European-style riding habit while the men are dressed in native American-style clothing.

[top] Text explains that the shopkeeper is of Portuguese extraction and describes his wares. [bottom] Text explains that the man on the donkey is a slave. The richness of the owner's riding tack determined the hospitality he received when traveling.The lithographs in this book were made from drawings made by Debret during his fifteen-year residence (1816-1831) in Brazil.
