notes:
Champlain first visited New France in 1603 where he had met Pierre de Chauvin, sieur de Tonduit, an Honfleur merchant who held a monopoly in the fur trade, and who had unsuccessfully tried to make a permanent settlement at Tadoussac. Champlain advocated the location of Quebec to settle the French colony in North America. This chart clearly shows the shallow water approaching Chauvin's house.Champlain drew the original from which the engraving was made.
