notes:
The convent is on Santo Antonio Hill and contains two churches. The church of Santo Antonio is the oldest in Rio, built from 1608 to 1620. The church of San Francisco was built in 1780.Henderson sailed for Brazil hoping to obtain a position in the British legation. Having failed to do so, he instead gathered material for a book. Nevertheless, his text is based on Manuel Aires de Casal's Corografia brazilica of 1817.Image placed horizontally on page.
