notes:
The jangada is described as being a raft made of balsa wood with a lateen sail, a paddle used as a rudder, a sliding keel, and a long forked pole on which are hung provisions for the trip.Henderson sailed for Brazil hoping to obtain a position in the British legation. Having failed to do so, he instead gathered material for a book. Nevertheless, his text is based on Manuel Aires de Casal's Corografia brazilica of 1817.Image placed horizontally on page.
