This book is a translation of three books by different authors. The first part contains the first part of Pierre Bouguer, La figure de la terre, Paris, 1749, which contains an account of Bouguer's scientific mission to Peru (actually, present-day Ecuador) which he took with Charles Marie de La Condamine to measure a degree of the meridian near the equator.
