notes:
The feathered ornament is called an enduap and was tied around the waist. Face stones were inserted into the skin of the cheeks and chin and may be called labrets. This image is found in the section called "Een warachtich cort bericht vanden handel ende zeden der Tuppin Imbas ..." (p. [153-208]) which has a special title page, but continuous signatures.Hans Staden was a German soldier who traveled twice to Brazil on Portuguese ships. On his second trip in 1522, he was shipwrecked and captured by the Tupinamba, also known as the Tuppin Imba or Tupi, a cannibalistic Brazilian tribe. For the images that are condensed into this one, cf. Staden, [Warhaftige Historia und Beschreibung], Marburg, 1557 (03373-20, 03373-22, 03373-23).
