Lichtenfels and Nieuw Hernhut [Neu Herrnhuth, Neuherrnhut, Ny Herrnhut, or New Herrnhuth] were missionary settlements founded by the Moravian Church. Nieuw Hernhut was established in 1733. The houses occupied by converted Inuit were probably constructed of sod; the largest building probably combined the Moravian communal living space, a place for worship, and perhaps a trading store.David Cranz, a German historian and missionary, spent 14 months in Greenland in 1761-62.
