notes:
Native American soldiers were recruited especially after the arrival of the Portuguese court in 1808 to patrol and extend the frontiers. They were more effective than European soldiers at fighting other natives. The protective clothing worn by some of the native Americans was called gibao or gibaon. It was made of quilted cotton and was meant to protect the wearer from arrows. The Botocudo people lived in the states of Minas Gerais and Bahía. Their name is derived from the Portuguese word for plug, referring to the wooden plug they wore in their lower lips and ears. The lithographs in this book were made from drawings made by Debret during his fifteen-year residence (1816-1831) in Brazil.Lithographer is probably Charles Etienne Pierre Motte (French printmaker and draftsman, 1785-1836).Image placed horizontally on page.
