notes:
Unalaska is both a city and an island in the Aleutian chain in present-day Alaska.Joseph Billings (1761-1806), an Englishman who served in the Russian navy, had previously sailed with Captain Cook on his third and final voyage. This scientific and exploratory expedition, Catherine II's response to English, Spanish, and French activity in the northern Pacific, brought to a close Russian explorations of the east coast of Siberia. Sauer was secretary to the 1785-1794 expedition.
