notes:
The chloroxylum tree was also known as the cogwood or cog-wood tree, because its extrememly hard wood was so useful for the cogs of sugar mills. Suzygium or Syzygium is a genus of flowering plants of the myrtle family. Browne notes that he saw only one example of this plant, and it bore dark berries.Image title from pp. 187 and 240 of text.In the plates the letter (a) indicates the empalement or cup; (b) the flower; (c) the filaments with their antherae; (d) the style and stigma; and (e), (f), and (g) the germen, fruit and seeds.Browne was an Irish medical doctor who settled in Jamaica in 1746. There he collected 1200 species of plants, 400 more than Sloane. He retired to Ireland in 1771.
