notes:
Cape Barrow separates Coronation Gulf from Bathurst Inlet. The expedition was exploring to the east, having entered the Arctic Ocean. The moment shown depicts two birchbark canoes in danger of being crushed by ice thrown about by a heavy sea.Franklin's expedition sailed in Hudson's Bay Company ships to try to map the northern part of Canada and to discover a northwest passage by land. Midshipmen Hood and Back were attached to the expedition because of their scientific and artistic abilities. Hood was the primary surveyor and draughtsman; he died in September, 1821, shot by Michel Terohaute, a voyageur or guide. Finden, the engraver, took considerable liberties with the original drawings.Image placed horizontally on page.
