The Coppermine River, its mouth in present-day Nunavut, Canada, flows into the Arctic Ocean at Coronation Gulf. Text states that the sun had set at 11:30. The expedition had come 334 miles from Fort Enterprise.Franklin's expedition sailed in Hudson's Bay Company ships to try to map the northern part of Canada and to discover a northwest passage by land. Midshipmen Hood and Back were attached to the expedition because of their scientific and artistic abilities. Hood was the primary surveyor and draughtsman; he died in September, 1821, shot by Michel Terohaute, a voyageur or guide. Finden, the engraver, took considerable liberties with the original drawings.Image placed horizontally on page.
