notes:
Point Lake, in present-day Northwest Territories, Canada, is 215 miles north of Yellowknife and is part of the Coppermine River system. The lake is 71 miles long and two miles wide. The expedition had left Fort Enterprise and was moving north.Franklin's expedition sailed in Hudson's Bay Company ships to try to map the northern part of Canada and to discover a northwest passage by land. Midshipmen Hood and Back were attached to the expedition because of their scientific and artistic abilities. Hood was the primary surveyor and draughtsman; he died in September, 1821, shot by Michel Terohaute, a voyageur or guide. Finden, the engraver, took considerable liberties with the original drawings.Image placed horizontally on page.
