notes:
The mockernut hickory, Carya tomentosa or Carya alba, is native to eastern North America. The insect is probably Megacyllene caryae, the painted hickory borer, a native insect that looks very like the locust borer.André Michaux and his son François-André were sent in 1785 by the French government to study the forest resources of North America. The French hoped to reforest their own country. François-André returned a few years later, also with a commission from the French government, and produced the Histoire des arbres forestiers ... Paris, 1810-13.This plate is part of Michaux's Histoire des noyers de l'Amérique septentrionale, considérés principalement sous les rapports de leur usage dans les arts et de leur introduction dans le commerce, ... Paris, 1811, which is bound with the 1810 work on pine and spruce trees. Thus, the plate numbers recommence, but the page numbers do not.Engraver may be Rosine-Antoinette Delaporte (1807-1876), an artist who often worked with Redouté.
