This is the settlement visited by Parry, Lyon, and others during in February of 1822. A group of Inuit came to their ships, and led them to the dwellings. Winter Island is at the southeast of Melville Peninsula in northern Canada.Lyon served as captain of the Hecla during Parry's second arctic expedition of 1821-23 in search of a northwest passage. The expedition reached the Fury and Hecla Strait between Baffin Island and Melville Peninsula in northern Canada.
