These animals may also be elephant seals, from the genus Mirounga. Text notes the "large trunk or snout that hangs down five or six inches below the end of the upper jaw" on the males. While on Juan Fernández Island, the sailors in Anson's fleet ate goats and sea lions. Commodore George Anson was sent to attack Spanish possessions in South America as part of the War of Jenkins' Ear. The mission began with six ships and almost 1000 men, but by the time Anson reached the island of Juan Fernández in June 1741, bad weather and scurvy had reduced the ships to three and the crews to about 335. The men sick with scurvy were disembarked and allowed to rest and recover in tents. Image probably derived from Richard Walker, A voyage, London 1748 (see 32896-020).
