notes:
Joseph Paul Gaimard, a ship's surgeon and naturalist, was the scientific leader on La Recherche (1835-1836) during its expedition to the Arctic Sea and voyages to Iceland and Greenland. Notes to description of plates states that the man is Sniólfur Thorleifson, aged 40 years, married to Arndis Einarsdóttir, and has had leprosy for three years. (Information from table of plates, missing from JCB volume.) Leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease (HD), is a chronic infection caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepromatosis and characterized by skin lesions, inability of nerves to feel pain, and poor eyesight.
