notes:
Rogers, a noted Indian scout, formed Rogers' Rangers, a fighting unit which took part in General James Wolfe's expedition against Quebec and in the Montreal campaign of 1760. George Washington refused Rogers' offer of help during the Revolutionary War because he feared Rogers might be a loyalist spy. The refusal caused Rogers to openly join the British and to fight against the colonial forces. This engraving is after the mezzotint probably engraved by R. Purcell under the pseudonym of C. Corbutt and one of a series done to supply the British public with (fictitious) portraits of American military leaders. Here the cannon and flag behind Lee are exluded.
