notes:
Jacquin was asked by the emperor of Austria, Francis I, to make a botanical exploration of the West Indies where he went from 1755 to 1759. On his return, he became professor of botany and director of the botanical garden of the University of Vienna in 1768.Gouania is a genus of flowering shrubs some of which are native to the Americas. The one depicted may be Gouania lupuloides, a native vine of the West Indies used to clean teeth. Cinchona caribaea is now Exostema caribaeum, commonly called Caribbean princewood. Pancratium littorale is now Hymenocallis littoralis, commonly called beach spiderlily. Lobelia Plumieri is now Scaevola plumieri, commonly called gullfeed. Epidendrum ciliare is commonly called fringed star orchid. Helicteres jamaicensis is commonly called screwtree. Smilax havanensis is commonly called Everglades greenbrier. Tamarindus indica is commonly called tamarind.Image placed horizontally on page.
